Verbatim Transcript Service

verbatim transcription

A verbatim transcript is when you transcribe exactly what you hear on an audio file. There’s no shortcuts, you have to pay full attention to what you hear.

There’s two types of verbatim: clean verbatim and then true or strict verbatim transcription.

Strict verbatim transcription is rarely done, and requires the transcriber to the listen to the audio multiple times. Everything in included in the transcript such as false starts and “uh and um.”

Clean verbatim transcribing is what you normally see in a professional transcript, for example a newspaper or magazine interview generally would use clean verbatim style.

Verbatim Examples

Here’s an example demonstrating the difference between the two types of verbatim:

Strict Verbatim

QUESTION: Tell me a little bit about, uh, where you grew up?

ANSWER: Okay. [clears throat] Sure, yeah. We lived — I grew up in Northern New Jersey. It’s, um, maybe 15 or 20 minutes from New York.

Clean Verbatim

QUESTION: Tell me a little bit about where you grew up?

ANSWER: I grew up in Northern New Jersey. It’s maybe 15 or 20 minutes from New York.

As you can see in the examples, strict verbatim captures everything — false starts, um’s, uh’s — and clean verbatim captures what is being said, but the superfluous information is missing.

Hybrid Verbatim

A third style of verbatim, which is a hybrid of strick & clean verbatim, looks like this:

QUESTION: Tell me a little bit about where you grew up?

ANSWER: Okay. Sure, yeah. We lived — I grew up in Northern New Jersey. It’s maybe 15 or 20 minutes from New York.

When requesting verbatim transcription keep in mind what type of verbatim is best for you. Is it clean, strict, or somewhere in-between?

Whatever style of verbatim you choose requires a transcriber that pays great attention to detail.
